Goodbye, Johnny Depp the actor. And hello, Johnny Depp the rocker.
Depp took over the Grammys stage with legends Alice Cooper and Joe Perry as the rock supergroup Hollywood Vampires on Monday night in their first televised performance.
Introduced by Dave Grohl of Foo Fighters, the group rocked the Staples Center with a performance of "As Bad As I Am," a song penned by the "Pirates of the Caribbean" actor.
Cooper, dressed in a blood-stained shirt and eyeliner (duh) took lead vocals, while Depp and Perry shredded on the guitar. A picture of recently deceased musician, Lemmy, was projected behind them.
Earlier that day, Depp dedicated the performance to his late stepfather, Robert Palmer, who died in 2000, using a toast of Palmer's as inspiration for lyrics.
"So the words of the song was this toast by my stepfather, who made his exit about 15 years ago," Depp told USA Today on Monday. "He was this really cool guy. He was a bit of a rounder. He spent about half his life in prison, in Statesville, Illinois. And he had this toast. 'Here’s to you, as good as you are. Here’s to me, as bad as I am. You're still as good as you are, as bad as I am.'"
Hollywood Vampires released their first album in 2015, featuring mostly classic rock covers and two original tracks, as a tribute to the rock stars of the 1970s.
